For 30 years my grandparents used part of the hayloft as a waiting area while their broodmares below welcomed new foals into the world. This space is now exclusively available for boarders and their families!
Since 1875...
Shadow Mountain Farm is a gorgeous 150 acre horse & cattle farm conveniently located just outside of Blacksburg, VA- below Mountain Lake. We are on a paved road just .5 miles off of 460- be to campus in less than 15 minutes!
For almost 150 years many generations of the same family have worked and lived on this farm. We are committed to preserving and stewarding this land for future generations. That same sense of responsibility guides our care of your four legged best friend- striving to provide a care free environment while offering top notch care!
The main pillar of our care is unlimited turnout. Wether you are on stall or field board, we believe a horse should have as much access to pasture as possible! We are fortunate to employ pasture rotations & spring growing season rest paddocks in efforts to never overgraze an area- providing truly unlimited grass to all boarders!
Equine Boarding
All inclusive
We strive to be hassle free! No hidden fees for holding for vet/farrier, blanketing, fly masks, supplements, or outside trainers. Want your horses inside all day if its nasty? Outside all day AND night if its nice? No problem- Our stall boarders enjoy unlimited turnout!
You may choose your own vet and farrier or use ours! Trailer parking also available! Enjoy our new 150 x 150 lighted arena with a multitude of jumps available for use (undergoing expansion this summer), or hack out on over 100 acres of trails and pastures to explore!
Field Board
Spaces currently available! Pastures fertilized yearly, spring fed water troughs, & quality fencing! Horses enjoy paddocks up to 20 acres!
Unlimited 2nd cutting round bales throughout winter. Multiple run ins available. Great drainage throughout the farm keeps all hooves happy! Great option for easy keepers or retirees looking to live their best life!
Main Barn
Our 10 stall main barn features a large hay loft, heated tack room, feed room, heated bathroom and wash rack with hot & cold water! We have plenty of storage available for all boarders!
Full care stall board includes daily feeding, hay and unlimited turnout. All stalls have mats, great ventilation & cleaned daily with fans during the summer months & heated water buckets during the winter months.
Historic Barn
Our sturdy amazing old lady is enjoying a new beginning! Our historic barn is traditionally a small, all gelding herd! This barn is unique because your horses' stalls and run in area are conveniently side by side! Tack cubbies are available in this barn for all historic barn boarders as well as a private feed room and a hayloft large enough for a football game! All amenities of the main barn are also available to Historic Barn boarders as they are just a few steps from one another! Full care stall board includes daily feeding, hay and unlimited turnout. All stalls have mats, great ventilation & cleaned daily.

Less than 15 minutes to Virginia Tech's campus & 2.7 miles from Mouintain Lake! 4 spacious bedrooms (1 K, 1 K, 1 Q, 1 Q) and 3 bathrooms, huge back deck & wonderful covered/ enclosed patio overlooking the farm!
